Joseph T. Alme, is new to the Minot State University faculty this year, or rather, after a 25-year leave of absence, is back to MSU this year. Mr. Alme is Assistant Professor of Music and Director of Bands where he teaches Low Brass, Band Methods, is Conductor of the MSU Concert Band, co-directs the Beaver Athletic Band, and also supervises music student teachers. Mr. Alme holds his BSE degree from Minot State University and a Master of Arts degree from the University of Northern Colorado. Mr. Alme taught in Class B and Class A schools in the area for 11 years, six years of which were served as Director of Bands at Minot High School Magic City Campus. He came to Minot State in the 80s as Director of Bands for four years. He then became the Executive Director of the International Music Camp for 25 years. Mr. Alme is well known as a guest conductor, clinician, and adjudicator having guest conducted in eleven states and provinces.

Mr. Alme is past president of the North Dakota Music Education Association, past Province Governor of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, served for ten years on the North Dakota Council on the Arts, and is former state chairman of the National Band Association. He is principal trombonist with the Minot Symphony Orchestra, the Brass Band of Minot and the North Dakota State Fair Band.

In 1978 the North Dakota Jaycees selected him North Dakota's "Outstanding Young Educator." Since that time he has received numerous awards in music education including his 1994 appointment as an International Honorary Member of Phi Beta Mu, International School Bandmasters Fraternity. At the same time he received the "International Contributor to Bands" award. In 1995 he was inducted into the North Dakota Music Educators Hall of Fame. In October 2003 he was recognized by the Swedish Government for his efforts in educating and mentoring young Scandinavian students and conductors. In March 2004, he received the North Dakota Band Directors Association "Distinguished Service Award." His most recent recognition was in May 2005 when he received the "2005 Service Award" sponsored by the North Dakota Association of Nonprofit Organizations.
