Penny Simons, is Instructor of Piano, Coordinator of Piano Studies, and also teaches Piano Pedagogy. She joined the faculty of Minot State in the fall of 2002. She studied in England at the Royal Academy of Music in London winning a scholarship at the age of 11 and then continuing her studies as a graduate student. Postgraduate work was at London University in Music Education. Ms. Simons is currently completing her Ph.D. at the University of North Dakota.
Ms Simons has performed with orchestra and as a collaborative pianist has performed extensively with many famous international artists. She has a vast knowledge of the piano repertoire. At Chethams she devised the piano program and has been on local committees of the Incorporated Society of Musicians. She has performed on tour with the English National Theatre Company in “Amadeus” as Mozart’s harpsichordist. She was the founder/ performer of the Quattromani Piano Duo. Ms Simons has broadcast on BBC, CBC, and NZBC networks and has been a guest chamber music coach in Australia, Canada ,the U.S.A. and the U.K.
Ms. Simons has been Head of Music at a boys’ Grammar school in England and was, for 6 years, on the piano faculty of Chethams International specialist school of Music in Manchester, England. At the Royal Academy, Ms. Simons studied with Robin Wood whose teacher was a student of Tobias Matthay. She has adapted these performance methods with her own based on many years of studying the performance practices of the outstanding pianists of the last 100 years. She is a frequent adjudicator in ND and the region. Her students have won many competitions and scholarships and have gone on to successful careers in music performance, teaching positions and graduate schools.
