Virginia Dohms came to MSU Spring 2008 semester as an instructor and is teaching Functional Piano. She has been teaching since 1983 when she began teaching music theory, music ministry, band, choir, private piano, class piano, drama club, and led a traveling music ensemble- wow!- all at Trinity Bible College in Ellendale, ND. After completing her master’s degree in 1987, she became the band director at Bishop Ryan High School in Minot for 4 years. In 1990, she took over the high school choir at the same school. In 1991-1992, she taught elementary music at Our Redeemer’s Christian School in Minot.

As well as teaching at Ryan, Mrs. Dohms was also Interim Director of Music Ministries at First Assembly of God in Minot from 1989-1990. In 1992, she took over that position more permanently, developed a highly successful church music program, and until 2006 directed choirs, worked with volunteer music staff, oversaw children and youth choirs, directed seasonal musicals and cantatas, and worked with the pastoral staff.

Mrs. Dohms has adjudicated numerous music festivals and done much accompanying and performing. Her final master’s paper brought her to Aruba and Curacao for an ethnomusical project. Her musical experience has been varied and given her perspective and unique talent to approach learning settings and Minot State students from various backgrounds and levels of ability.
