
Native American Awareness Week set at MSU
Native American Awareness Week will be held Nov 5-8
at Minot State University. All activities except for the Indian
taco sale and arts and crafts display will be held in the MSU
Conference Center, located on the third floor of the MSU
Student Center.
The activities will begin Nov. 5 at 1 p.m. with Anna
Rubia and Diane Medicine Stone presenting "Our Mother’s
Grandfather, She-Heg-Shote (White Coyote)." Rubia and
Medicine Stone are members of the Three Affiliated Tribes.
Events continue Nov. 6 with Vernon Lampert, Spirit
Lake Nation, speaking about "Tribal Sovereignty: What
Does it Mean?" at 10 a.m. and Marvin Youpee Sr., Fort Peck
Assiniboine and Sioux, discussing "Tribal Courts and Legal
Systems" at 1 p.m.
On Nov. 7 an Indian taco sale will be held in the first floor
of Old Main from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and arts and crafts will be
displayed. At 2 p.m. in the Conference Center, Marvin Bald
Eagle Young Man, Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa, will
present "Native American Olympics-Traditional Hand Games."
Activities on Nov. 8 include Bald Eagle Young Man
discussing "Native American Medicinal Plants, the First Ask-
A-Nurse Program," at 10 a.m. At 1 p.m., traditional dancing,
singing and storytelling will be demonstrated. Examples of
Native American traditional dances to be performed are grass
dance, jingle dress dance, and round dance.
The four days of free cultural events and presentations are
open to the public and sponsored by the MSU Native American
Cultural Awareness Club.
