MSU International Study Tours—May 2008

Minot State University is planning two international study tours during May, 2008. Through Horizons Unlimited faculty-led study tours, students have the option to travel to Ireland and the United Kingdom or to China.

Minot State University recognizes that Study Abroad programs significantly enhance students’ professional and personal competencies, while providing students with a deeper understanding of the subject matter being discussed and with other cultures. In order to encourage more students to have an international experience during their time at MSU, two faculty-lead study tours have been developed.

Horizons Unlimited study tours are a great way for Minot State students to learn and see the world because all logistical arrangements are provided for, and tour participants will travel in the comfort of an MSU professor that is familiar with the culture and customs of the host country. During the tour, the instructor will relate course objectives to local culture, customs, famous sites and history.

Ireland and the United Kingdom May 15-29
Participants of this study tour will discover the beauty of the deep green hills of the Irish countryside, Scotland’s rich artistic and cultural diversity, and the excitement of London. The itinerary will give students the chance to climb castles, ride double-decker buses, and visit ancient battle sites.

Tour highlights include:
• Ring of Kerry
• Blarney Castle
• Georgian squares of Dublin
• St. Patrick’s Cathedral
• North Wales Lake District
• Edinburgh Castle
• Isle of Skye
• London: Buckingham Palace, Big Ben, Parliament, Westminster Abbey, the British Museum

Students traveling to Ireland and the U.K. will be enrolled in Humanities 496 Exploring Ireland, Scotland & Britain (3 credits). The tour will be lead by Dr. Michelle Sauer, Associate Professor of English and Gender Studies. Dr. Sauer specializes in the literature and culture of medieval Britain. She previously directed this program in 2002, 2004 and 2006, and has extensive experience living and traveling throughout the United Kingdom.

China May 16-31
Why is it important to get to know China? China boasts the world’s fastest growing economy and is America’s third-largest trading partner. But what makes this country so interesting is the mix of ancient history and extreme modernity. Still, evidence of China’s long history can be seen in the customs, and traditions of its people, especially in rural areas.

Tour highlights include:
• Forbidden City
• Palace Museum
• Great Wall
• Tiananmen Square
• Terra Cotta Army
• Shanghai Bund and Pudong Districts
• Visits to Chinese business and factories
• Ample opportunity to visit and interact with Chinese students from SIAS University

The tour will be led by Dr. Robert Kibler (Humanities) and Dr. Gary Ross (Business), both faculty members with previous experience living, working or traveling in China. Participants of this study tour can enrolled in one of the following:

• Humanities 496-Encountering the Celestial Kingdom: Special Topics in Chinese Culture (3credits),
• English 496-Topics & Problems in Chinese Literature (3 credits), or
• Business Administration 499-Doing Business in China (3 credits).
