Burr paints murals at MSU Ryan Burr, an artist and pow-wow dancer, has finished one painted mural in the Minot State University Student Center, and he is working on another. The subject of his completed work, which is on the wall near the Office of International Programs, is the Blue Mosque in Istanbul, Turkey. Currently, he is working on a second with a native theme on the wall between the entrances of the pool and bookstore. The painting features regional buttes, a sunset sky, prairie grass, a Native American village, buffalo, a beaver hut and a beaver dam. It also includes two portraits: one of an idealized Native American man in his late 20s or early 30s and another of a Native American man in traditional dress. Later, Burr will paint a third mural near the international programs office. An enrolled member of the Three Affiliated Tribes, Burr began painting professionally in 1988, and he has been creating murals since 2002. The ones at MSU are his first outside of the Fort Berthold Indian Reservation. He has done the tribal and tourism logos in the Mandan, Hidatsa, and Arikara Nation's tribal building in New Town, a mural in the Cache restaurant of the 4-Bears Casino, and six murals at the Fort Berthold Community College. At FBCC, he created three with students in classes that he taught, and the college commissioned him to do the others. He has also displayed his artwork at Indian markets, which feature the work of Native American artists only, pow-wows and art shows. | |||||||||||||
