Women's basketball gets invite to nationals

Minot State University women's basketball received a pleasant surprise Tuesday evening - a call from the NAIA said the Beavers were in the national tournament, March 12-18 in Sioux City, Iowa. As the Dakota Athletic Conference champs, the Beaver men had automatically earned the trip to nationals, which gets underway on the same dates.

"We were very surprised. We had been following it and had an idea of what needed to happen," MSU head coach Sheila Green-Gerding said. "There were a lot of things that we needed."

The Beavers were sitting at the No. 32 position since they lost in the DAC postseason tournament last Wednesday. The number of possible scenarios that would put the Beavers into the national tourney went from nine, to five, to just two going into Tuesday's play.

The pairings will be announced at 5 p.m. today for both the men's and women's tournaments, which get underway on the same dates. Meantime, Green-Gerding and her staff have been calling all the players, many scattered to far distances for Spring Break.

"We have contacted everybody," she said. "We have people in Mexico, Arizona and Illinois. They are all on their way back for spring break."
