MSU Makes $14,000 Awards to Great Plains Exceptional Scholars

Minot State University will be introducing the recipients of the Great Plains Exceptional Scholar Award on Wednesday (April 30) at 5 p.m. in the Conference Center, located on the third floor of the Student Center.

The ten incoming freshmen receiving the awards have earned a $14,000 scholarship. The Great Plains Exceptional Scholar Awards are being offered by Minot State University in support of its goal to become one of the premier public, regional universities in the Great Plains of North America.

"Minot State University is very interested in attracting and rewarding students who, for example, participate in community service, volunteer to help others, or work to make where they live a better place," said President David Fuller. "We believe these students will help us establish ourselves as a distinctive institution that is not only committed to academic excellence, but recognized for graduates who have a true appreciation for the Great Plains. They will be known for their dedication to service for the welfare of others and to stewardship of place and community."

Incoming freshmen from states and provinces within the Great Plains were invited to apply, and they had to achieve a 3.65 or above grade-point average in high school and a composite ACT score of 30-36 or a combined SAT score of 1340-1600 in order to qualify. The selection process also required students to submit an essay that demonstrated their civic engagement or their contribution to a sense of place.

To be eligible for the initial award and subsequent renewals, students must be enrolled in 12 credit hours and maintain a GPA of 3.3 or above. The scholarship will be paid in increments of $3,500 per year, in equal installments each semester, for four consecutive undergraduate years provided all renewal criteria are met.
