Honors Program in Engagement & Scholarship (HOPES)

Frequently asked questions

What’s the first class I am supposed to take?
If you meet the criteria for the Honors Program; a minimum composite ACT score of 25, SAT score in the range of 1130-1160, high school GPA of 3.5 or greater, or a college GPA of 3.30, then start with English 111, Honors Composition I.

What if I did not find out about this Honors thing until I had started English 110? Am I out of luck?
No, the English 111, requirement is waived for late entrants. And if you are getting a teaching degree, you also need to take Comm 110, Fundamentals of Public Speaking.

What else do I have to take?
A year of foreign language- not a bad idea in today’s world, and it can be used to meet general education humanities requirements. Also, nine credits of honors general education electives are needed.

What is a general education elective?
This means that you need at least three credits in each of the following categories: arts, history, and humanities; mathematics and sciences; and social sciences and professional studies. These classes fulfill Honors general education requirements and may fulfill MSU general education requirements.

Is that it?
Not quite. Sign up for two Great Works classes (six credits) and the Senior Honors Essay and Seminar (two credits). Then that’s it. It all counts as a concentration.

What’s an Honors class like?
They are reading and writing intensive, but friendly. Students feel free to share ideas and opinions openly.
